,,,,,,,,we were trained as soldier first before becoming an officer and later chopper pilot. Saw lots of actions in the frontline and flew hundreds of missions deep into enemy camps itself, lost many mates and some aircrew too. Indeed, never fully disclosed to the general public in-order not to scare away foreign investors as detailed by the politicians and we struggled day in day out against all odds in those days.
 Back in the mid-seventies when Vietnam fell to the communists, the local CTs were very well armed and high spirited, such more than 20 choppers were shot and hit in just one crazy operation, plus almost daily at times at and across the Thai/M'sia border areas, so leaving many bloody battle scars in my memories.
 I can still remember the many dying soldiers after being ambushed/mined/booby trapped and suffering from various sickness in the jungle plus the flying doc. services to the orang asli to win their hearts and minds from the CTs. The scary part is going to the remote orang asli villages on the Alouette 111, knowing fully well that the CTs were watching you from the trees and only armed with an M16 together with the AQM and his Sterling plus my browning.
 The main reason that they don't shoot at us cos. some of the medicines were taken later by them too !. No body wanted to know anything about it so we have just got to live with it !. Guess we chopper pilots were a very special breed indeed hehehe ! Even the CTs respected our deeds for the flying doc. services from the looks of it then. There was a mutual respect btw us, i guess. They never shot any of the flying doc. services chopper ever !. 
Guess its all history right now and perhaps more stories will be out in the open via bloggings by ex-servicemen if you care to read them. Most of us kept it just in bad memories or in frightening dreams.
in fact, most ex-servicemen hates the present dirty corrupted politicians worst than the CTs !. You bet ?.
